THE AMEL CUP MED 2023:
An unforgettable Event!

Following the resounding success of its inaugural edition, The Chantiers AMEL embarked on another remarkable journey on the picturesque island of Porquerolles from June 15 to 18. This year, a total of 12 magnificent AMEL yachts congregated, sailing in unison with a harmonious blend of relaxation and competitiveness.

The crews found themselves amidst the idyllic setting of this charming Mediterranean island, basking under a radiant sunshine. The prevailing wind conditions proved to be a true test for all sails, while the glistening azure waters witnessed the unfurling of exquisite gennakers.
Each regatta commenced with five AMEL 60s, three AMEL 50s, three AMEL 55s, and one AMEL 64 gracefully setting sail. The enchanting spectacle of these majestic yachts gliding together on the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea was truly a sight to behold! Every vessel had the opportunity to showcase its prowess, with crews consisting of 2 to 8 individuals, making the most of their respective yacht’s unique attributes. Onshore, participants relished moments of camaraderie as they bonded over their shared passion.

For a comprehensive account of the AMEL Cup Med 2023, including daily summaries and in-depth details, delve into the following narrative. Please note that the final ranking is determined through the calculation of compensated times.

ACM DAY 1

Welcome to Porquerolles for the second edition!

In the late afternoon, participants arrived at the Porquerolles harbour. We would like to express our gratitude to the staff, who were as welcoming and professional as ever.

The atmosphere was lively and upbeat. Some teams, including the AMEL 60 yachts Engane, Tao, and Loveli, as well as the AMEL 50 Rose Marius, were returning participants from the previous AMEL Med Cup.

The crews were thrilled and eager to commence the races. The boats were perfectly prepared, with hulls sleek and polished, ready to challenge each other on the water!

However, before getting started, a briefing was held. The AMEL team presented the program and rules for the upcoming regattas. In the back of everyone’s minds, strategies were already a foot. The first day, dedicated to welcoming participants, concluded with a delightful welcome cocktail on the terrace of the Restaurant-Bar L’Escale.

ACM DAY 2

Two races on the first day

On Friday morning, the first race, spanning approximately 6 miles, began in front of the Porquerolles harbour. The course took the yachts northwest, rounding a buoy at Cap Estérel, before proceeding eastward towards the Duc d’Albe marker, just before Cape Medes. After passing the marker on the starboard side, the yachts headed towards the finish line, once again in front of the harbour.

Despite the light wind in the morning, the participants were eager and crossed the start line at 10 am. The yachts AMEL 60 Infinity, Loveli, and Engane demonstrated impressive speed, leading in real time. Following closely by the AMEL 50 Rose Marius and the AMEL 55 Thauride V.

However, since the rankings were based on compensated time, Infinity claimed victory, followed by Rose Marius and Loveli.

In the afternoon, a new regatta called the Duc d’Albe took place, covering a similar distance (the original 9NM was shortened due to light winds). The start line was once again located in front of Porquerolles harbour, commencing at 1:30 pm. The yachts sailed west towards Grand Ribaud island, leaving it to starboard before returning east to cross the finish line. This time, Loveli emerged as the winner of the second regatta, with Infinity closely behind, followed by Engane. The AMEL 50 Lemovix was the fourth yacht to cross the line, trailed by Rose Marius. Based on compensated time, Loveli claimed the top spot on the podium, with Infinity and Lemovix securing the subsequent positions.

After a day filled with thrilling sailing action, the crews returned to the harbour, taking advantage of the pleasant evening to recharge before the next day’s regatta.

ACM DAY 3

Eole Awakens for the Island Tour!

At 9:00 am, a briefing took place on the quay. This morning, a steady easterly wind of 10-15 knots greeted the participants, accompanied by glorious sunshine. The conditions were optimal for the round the island regatta, scheduled to start at 10:00 am in front of the harbour. The 12NM course offered various points of sail, beginning with a windward close-hauled start. As the fleet approached Les Mèdes, three AMEL 60 yachts quickly pulled ahead, taking advantage of their superior upwind performance.

Soon, the fleet reached the Petit Sarranier islet. While Loveli had already gybed and set up her Code 0 sail, Infinity unfurled its genoa and its blue gennaker, preparing to deploy the spinnaker pole for optimal sail area. Engane, not far behind, presented a stunning sight with its white hull and sails billowing as it sailed downwind. The course was adorned with colourful light sails, leading towards the western tip of the island, and passing the Jeaune Garde. It was during the final stretch that the positions were reshuffled. Infinity tactically chose a slightly different route than Loveli and ultimately crossed the finish line first after 1 hour and 56 minutes. Loveli arrived three minutes later, followed by Engane at 2:05, Papato (64) at 2:09, and Lemovix (50) at 2:12. Based on the compensated time coefficients, Infinity, Loveli, and Lemovix secured podium positions in this third regatta.

Following the exhilarating race, the crews dispersed for a well-deserved rest at anchor or in the harbour, before gathering for dinner at the heart of Porquerolles village, at the L’Aventure restaurant, for the trophy presentation.

The winners of the AMEL Med Cup 2023 received their awards, recognising their outstanding performances in both the overall and category rankings. After displaying remarkable skills over the two days regattas, the AMEL 60 Infinity emerged as the champion of the second edition of the AMEL Med Cup. The AMEL 50 Lemovix, AMEL 64 Papato, and AMEL 55 Thauride V claimed well-deserved first place finishes. Congratulations to all the crews!

To conclude the evening, participants relished the highlights of this year’s event through a video produced by Sébastien from Skippers magazine. The images from the “Crews in Action” photo contest, organised during the event, were also showcased, and put to vote.

Congratulations to the Engane crew for winning the AMEL Med Cup photo prize, and to the Papato crew for receiving the Coup de Coeur de l’équipe AMEL (The AMEL team’s crush).

AMEL CUP MED DAY 4: The Second Edition Ends!

To conclude the 2023 edition of the AMEL Med Cup, participants and the AMEL team gathered at Domaine de la Courtade, a magnificent site nestled amidst 35 hectares of vineyards on the heights of the Porquerolles Isle. The group enjoyed a guided tour, accompanied by detailed explanations of the grape varieties and winemaking techniques. The experience continued with a delightful tasting of the estate’s various wines.
